MPS Culinary & Wellness Services hosts an annual Junior Iron Chef Competition to raise awareness for our district's shifts towards more healthy, fresh, scratch-cooked meals; and excite students about good food and cooking! 

5th annual Junior Iron Chef Competition

When: May 2nd, 2019 | 5:30-7:30pm
Where: Chowgirls @ Solar Arts, 711 NE 15th Ave, Minneapolis, 55413
Join us as middle school students and local chefs team up to compete top-chef for a panel of judges! Teams will have one hour to prepare a dish using a pantry of ingredients, and the winning dish will be added to the MPS lunch menu! This year's competition theme will be plant-forward food; each team will be have to prepare a vegetarian dish using a specified plant-based protein.

  • MPS students currently enrolled in 6th-8th grade.
  • Students interested in good food & cooking! Applications with varying levels of cooking experience will be considered.
  • New this year! Students are strongly encouraged to apply in pairs, so grab a friend and apply to compete together! Students may also apply individually, but two students from a school will be selected to compete together on a team with a professional chef.
  • Online applications (http://bit.ly/JIC2019application) are due by 4pm on Friday, April 5th.  
  • The application includes an essay question: “Why do you want to compete in the MPS Junior Iron Chef Competition?” Get creative with their response! Consider including when and why you love to cook, your favorite dishes to cook, your previous cooking experience, and why participating in this event is important to you. Note: previous cooking experience is not required. 1000 character maximum.
  • Six teams will compete in the event. Each team will consist of one chef and two students from the same school. Students are strongly encouraged to apply as pairs, but are still able to apply individually.
  • The Jr Iron Chef Planning Committee will review all applications, select students, and assign teams.
  • Selected student participants will be notified the week of April 8th (after spring break).
  • Selected students participants are encouraged to invite family, friends, teachers, etc. to attend the event and cheer them on as they compete!
  • Teams will have one hour to prepare a dish using a panty of provided ingredients, and the winning recipe will added to the MPS lunch menu!
