Safe Routes to School Friends,

The Let’s Roll was FANTASTIC. We estimate we had about 150 students, parents, staff, and community members join this inaugural ride. The most common comment heard was how fun it was to be waved at and cheered on by neighbors. Thank you to all who participated. A special thank you to the school groups that participated in the group bicycle ride—Bethune, Nellie Stone Johnson, Pillsbury, Whittier, and Transition Plus High School (on-the-road maintenance); to School Board Director Jenny Arneson for joining the ride; to the Culinary and Nutrition Center for the delicious snacks at the end; to Ben Anderson and MPS Communications for the beautiful pictures; and to Officer Edwards and Officer Klimpke and all the volunteers that supported the ride. We HAVE to do this again, right?

And how great is this? Not one but TWO Minneapolis Public School bicycle groups meet up on the River Road Parkway near the North Loop on Monday and Tuesday mornings this week. Unplanned! Shout outs to Pillsbury Pedal Power and Nellie Stone Johnson 5th grade P.E. class. The awesome students of Nellie Stone Johnson have been putting their bicycle riding skills in action biking a 6 ½ mile loop to the Stone Arch Bridge and back and learning to follow traffic signals, make left turns, and “take the lane” when the traffic situation warrants it. Way to go students! At Pillsbury—every fourth grade class is getting a turn at the all-day bicycle field trip.  Way to go Pedal Power (and you can hear from them directly at the Youth Bike Summit this weekend—see more below).

Two more great MPS bike events to share: Parents at Seward Montessori arranged to get a trailer of bicycles and a whole bunch of partners and volunteers to be at Cedar Riverside at 6:30 a.m. so that students who did not have bicycles could bike to school from their homes.  Inspiring and amazing! And Northrop held its annual bicycle field trip last week with more than 200 participants, including a dozen kindergartners completing a 4 mile trip!

What are your bike/walk/wellness year-end highlights? Please email them we’ll share them in final Safe Routes to School update of 2015-2016. Some great events below. As always contact MPS SRTS for support of your walk/bike dreams.
