Safe Routes to School Friends,

Roy Hallanger, a great friend to Safe Routes to School and a longtime employee of Minneapolis Public Schools, passed away this summer. To his beautiful obituary I will add—Roy never ever EVER said no to a request to help our students. He has bicycled with school after school—Bryn Mawr, Whittier, Marcy, Bethune, South High, Seward+++…He’s helped lead countless professional development bicycle trainings and served as the Minneapolis Public Schools representative on the City of Minneapolis Bicycle Advisory Committee where he helped to make Minneapolis a more bicycle friendly place for our kids and for everyone. Chances are if you read about it here—Roy was involved in some way. Remember our big ride on May 4? Roy was our caboose, and he made sure we all completed the journey. A friend recalled she was told—when you see Roy, you know everyone is alright. What a comfort and joy he was to see in his brightly colored bike gear at the end of the ride. He is and will continue to be deeply missed.

So as you read on, you will see we have a fantastic new home, we are preparing for the best-ever Walk/Bike Day, and we can’t wait for Open Streets on West Broadway,  but we open this school year with sadness.

Register Now | MPS Walk and Bike to School Day | October 5  | Flyers, stickers, and more!

October 5 is International Walk to School Day. Minneapolis Public Schools will join families around the world to celebrate the joys and reap the benefits of walking and biking to school. (And if Oct 5 doesn’t work for your school’s walk/bike day, you can choose a day that does.) Events can be as simple as announcing “It’s walk and bike to school day,” and providing I WALKED and I BIKED stickers to walkers and bikers as they arrive. If you register your walk/bike event with MPS SRTS, we’ll send you these stickers, small incentives like mystery tickets for Nickelodeon Universe, and everything you need for a successful event. Health Partners/My Personal Solution will have prize drawings for wellness goodie bags for staff who participate. Last year more than 37 schools participated. Anyone can organize this event for their school community—staff, students, or parent. Register soon: Mystery tickets and other goodies are while supplies last. Don’t let your school be left out.

Our mission:  Nurturing  ALL children through access to quality food and active living. The changes around food in MPS have been astonishingly fantastic since the addition of the chef’s hat to the logo of what was once called the nutrition center (read more). It is exciting to now see the active child included on the logo as well. As we look forward to best year yet, watch for our new newsletter and other changes that integrate these efforts.
